Letters to the SMH Editor re Mao
On Monday 5 October 2009, the Sydney Morning Herald Opinion printed the following letter from Andrew McKinnon, Millers Point.
I am sure that all Friends of the Australian Ballet and arts lovers everywhere agree with his words –
SHARE THE GLORY
On Friday night, as I was leaving the cinema after viewing the absorbing film Mao’s Last Dancer, I caught sight of the dramatic projection on to one of the Harbour Bridge Pylons of the image of a rugby league player.
It was a timely reminder of the primacy of sport over the arts in this country as it is difficult to imagine too many similar acknowledgments for artists occurring in this manner.
Bruce Beresford’s film about the life of the former Australian Ballet star Li Cunxin is a reminder of the tremendous discipline and determination which is necessary to reach the top of this and many other demanding artforms.
These requirements for success are at least equal to those for sporting stars and it is to be hoped that in due course they will be recognised as such throughout the entire community.
